Glass cover manufacturer: How to defend against self explosion of tempered glass

Do you know why tempered glass will self destruct? In fact, there are many reasons for the self explosion of tempered glass, such as the phase transition swelling of nickel sulfide particles in the glass, stress concentration caused by bubbles and stones, excessive tempering, uneven stress in tempered glass, low processing quality of glass edges, and large size of tempered glass, which may lead to self explosion of tempered glass.

The underlying reason for the self explosion of tempered glass is the swelling of nickel sulfide (NiS). NiS is generally a crystalline material with a thermodynamic tendency to undergo alpha phase to beta phase changes at room temperature, accompanied by a volume expansion of 2% to 3%. When temperature changes meet corresponding kinetic conditions, it can cause tempered glass to self destruct. Therefore, temperature changes are the direct cause of tempered glass self explosion, which is why self explosion often occurs during seasonal changes and in the south and west directions of intense solar radiation. In addition, wind loads, glass installations, etc. can also alter the stress distribution inside tempered glass, becoming a possible trigger for tempered glass to self destruct.

So how should we protect against such a self explosion?

1. Tempered glass belongs to the category of glass confirmed by regulations and is widely used in places that require high mechanical strength, such as glass doors, curtain walls, facade windows, indoor partitions, furniture, and partitions near heat sources and locations that are subject to severe thermal shock. The characteristics of tempered glass determine that self explosion is unavoidable, and the time and conditions of self explosion cannot be estimated. Therefore, in order to prevent damage caused by self explosion of tempered glass, measures or methods are often adopted in the glass processing and installation process to reduce the losses caused by self explosion of tempered glass.

2. Hot dip treatment (homogenization treatment): Place tempered glass in a hot dip furnace for heating, insulation, and cooling treatment, so that the nickel sulfide in the tempered glass reaches a stable state, and the stress inside the glass is balanced to achieve the intention of reducing the self explosion rate. Advantages: greatly reduced self explosion rate, low cost, no changes to glass standards and layout. Shortcoming: Unable to eliminate self explosion, and the stress will correspondingly decrease.

3. Laminated glass: PVB center film is sandwiched between glasses and processed under high temperature and high pressure. The toughness of PVB film is very good. When laminated glass breaks under external force, it can absorb a large amount of impact energy and rapidly decay, so laminated glass is difficult to penetrate and maintains good integrity. This allows buildings using laminated glass to remain within the door and window frames even if the glass breaks during explosions, wind disasters, earthquakes, and other situations, protecting personnel inside and outside the building from damage from flying glass fragments. Wind, rain, and other foreign objects are also difficult to cause damage to the interior. The shortcomings are:

1) Adding the weight and thickness of glass to the load-bearing capacity and load capacity of the building;

2) Not conducive to escape and rescue during a fire;

3) Add construction cost.

4. Film coated glass: Apply high-performance polyester film onto the glass. Polyester film, commonly known as safety explosion-proof film, can stick to glass fragments to prevent splashing when glass breaks for various reasons. It can protect personnel inside and outside the building from damage caused by splashing glass fragments, and it is also difficult for wind, rain, and other foreign objects to cause damage indoors. The safety explosion-proof film can be connected to the frame edge system together with organic glue to form a glass film maintenance system to prevent it from falling off. Advantages: Easy to process, without changing glass standards and layout. Shortcoming: Adding construction cost.

5. Enclosure design: Install guardrails and other measures in densely populated areas to prevent damage caused by glass breakage.

6. Ultra white tempered glass: good thermal stability, high strength, low self explosion rate (approaching 0), safe to use, high transparency, good permeability, high technical content, wide range of applications.
